“...That we can come together and build an America that gives every child everywhere the opportunity to live out their dreams. This time can be different.”--President Barack Obama
There is a variety to social and emotional issues within the North Lawndale community. These issues affects the student's capability of building community within their classroom and school. My vision for this idea is to see students build a safe, collaborative, and creative community within their classroom, school, and neighborhood. Also, parents have complained about the Common Core State States and what they call “new math.” My ImagineIT project is about building a community through mathematics. The image of the earth represents how things are always changing and evolving. Hopefully the community will grasp this concept and have a growth mindset on adapting to change. The next image has a watermark of numbers and geometric shapes with the title Redefining Possible. Though the standards are new and it’s time to view change with an open mind and reevaluate what you believe as possible. The idea factory is image is about working together and sharing our ideas to help one another grow. I took the photos at the Museum of Science and Industry and use Paint to edit photos and add text.
This video is a visual of my vision for my ImagineIT project. It introduce the negative fixed mindset on how people feel about math. Since the implementation of Common Core State Standards I’ve heard things like “I don’t like this new math” and I’m not good at math. The project is designed to change the fixed mindset to a growth mindset and build a math community within the classroom, school, and family/neighborhood. There are images that described the growth mindset and promote mistakes are welcome so try again. It is important for others to understand I am promoting a powerful classroom that includes cognitive demand, access for all students, and giving students the authority to collaborate and build on one another ideas. Students in the photos working in small groups represents the building of the community within the classroom. During this time constructive arguments will take place and building on understanding and conceptual knowledge in a risk free environment. The parents, other family members, and other community members working together in the photo represents working together to help one another understand the content and concepts. The last photo is the happy faces after completing a year long project of building and learning together.
